So you’ve switched to bamboo from plastic and you’re probably wondering if you need to adjust the way you clean your hairbrushes now. So how do you clean a bamboo hairbrush?
The good news is it’s only a few small changes to your usual routine that are needed due to your handle being bamboo and your bristles being natural instead of nylon.
As with all your combs and brushes, bamboo hairbrushes should be cleaned at least once a month to keep them hygienic, hair-free and in top condition.
How to clean a bamboo hairbrush
To start with, remove all the hair from your brush. There are several implements on the market to help you do this, like this one but using a rat tail comb to tease out the hair, lint and other fluff will do just fine.
Once all the hair is removed, throw it away. Many people are tempted to leave it outside for the birds (this is common in the UK) but recently we discovered that it’s not a good idea as birds can get themselves caught up and even trapped in long hair strands.
Even treatments on your hair, such as colouring, can be toxic to birds. So despite us thinking we’re doing a good deed, it’s really better to throw your hair away.
With plastic brushes, you can give them a good soak in warm soapy water at this stage however with a bamboo brush you want to avoid this (also any brushes with wooden handles).
Instead, just dunk your brushes into warm soapy water long enough to get them wet and skip straight to the scrubbing stage.
Because bamboo is grass and not a type of wood it doesn’t tend to absorb water in the same way as wood however you should still avoid soaking it in order to preserve the longevity of the natural bristles.
Next, use an old toothbrush to scrub the brush, the bristles and the handle to remove any debris such as skin flakes and the soapy water will remove any remaining hair oils.
Use the toothbrush to clean the bristles from the base to the tip, brushing any debris away from the body of the hairbrush and away from the bristles.
When finished, rinse your bamboo hairbrush under warm, running water.
With brushes that have cushioned bristle beds, give them a gentle squeeze to ensure all of the soapy water has been rinsed away.
All that’s left to do now is to lay those brushes on a towel and allow them to naturally dry for at least 12 hours.
What to look for when switching to bamboo hairbrushes
When you’re looking to switch from plastic to bamboo, be sure to be mindful of not only the handle being bamboo but also the bristles.
Some bamboo hairbrushes will have natural boar bristles which you will wish to avoid if, like me, you’re a vegan.
Be sure to check that your natural bamboo bristle has rounded ends, helping to massage your scalp and distribute hair oils evenly to keep your hair shiny and sleek.
Bamboo hairbrushes are safe to use when styling your hair with heat, they reduce static and being naturally antibacterial means your brushes stay healthy between cleans.
However, If cleaning your bamboo hairbrush hasn’t restored it to its former glory it might be time for a replacement.
